How PAYE is worked out
- Multiply your monthly pay by 12 for your annual pay.
- Take off your retirement fund contributions, up to 27.5% of your pay and R430 000 a year. The rest is your taxable income.
- Work out the tax on your taxable income from SARS's 2026/27 tax table.
- Take off your rebates (R17 820 for everyone, more from 65 and 75) and your medical scheme fees tax credits.
- Divide what is left by 12. That is your PAYE for the month.
Your employer works it out the same way each month and pays it to SARS for you. A bonus is taxed at the extra tax it adds to your year.
