Free payslip generator

Short answer

A payslip must show your business's name and address, the employee's name and job, the pay period, the pay, each deduction and what it's for, and the amount paid; for hourly or overtime pay, the rates and hours too (BCEA section 33). Fill those in here and PAYE and UIF are worked out from SARS's 2026/27 tables.

Earnings

Hourly wage R92.31: the salary ÷ 4⅓ weeks ÷ the weekly hours (BCEA section 35; 45 hours unless they ordinarily work fewer). It sets the default overtime, Sunday and public holiday rates.

Left empty: R138.46, at least one and a half times the hourly wage (BCEA section 10(2))

Left empty: R184.62, double the hourly wage, or one and a half times if the employee ordinarily works on Sundays. A short Sunday shift is paid at least the ordinary daily wage (BCEA section 16).

Left empty: R184.62, double the hourly wage. On a day they would ordinarily work, the Act asks for at least double the day's wage, or the day's wage plus pay for the time worked if that's more; on a day they wouldn't, the day's wage plus pay for the work done (BCEA section 18). Check a part-day against that.

The overtime and Sunday rules (sections 10 and 16) and section 18(3) don't cover employees earning more than R269 600.90 a year in regular pay, from 1 May 2026 (Government Notice 7384).

Taxed at the extra tax it adds to the employee's year.

What a payslip must show

An employer gives each employee this information in writing every payday. The list is in section 33 of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act:

  • Your business's name and address (s33(1)(a))
  • The employee's name and job (s33(1)(b))
  • The period the pay is for (s33(1)(c))
  • The pay earned, in money (s33(1)(d))
  • Each deduction: the amount and what it is for (s33(1)(e))
  • The amount actually paid (s33(1)(f))
  • The rate of pay and the overtime rate, if used to work out the pay (s33(1)(g)(i))
  • Ordinary and overtime hours worked in the period, if used to work out the pay (s33(1)(g)(ii))
  • Hours worked on a Sunday or public holiday, if used to work out the pay (s33(1)(g)(iii))
  • Total ordinary and overtime hours over the averaging period, if working time is averaged (s12), if used to work out the pay (s33(1)(g)(iv))

Rates and hours are needed when they are used to work out the pay, for example for hourly or overtime pay. It is given at the workplace, or a place the employee agrees to, during working hours or within 15 minutes of the start or end of them.

Overtime, Sunday and public holiday pay

The generator fills in the Basic Conditions of Employment Act's minimum rates when you leave a rate empty. They work from the hourly wage; for a monthly salary, that's the salary ÷ 4⅓ weeks ÷ the ordinary weekly hours (section 35).

  • Overtime: at least one and a half times the hourly wage. (section 10(2))
  • Sundays: double the hourly wage, or one and a half times if the employee ordinarily works on Sundays. A short Sunday shift is paid at least the ordinary daily wage. (section 16)
  • Public holidays: On a day the employee would ordinarily work: at least double the day's wage, or the day's wage plus pay for the time worked if that is more. On a day the employee would not ordinarily work: the ordinary daily wage plus pay for the work done. (section 18)

Employees earning more than R269 600.90 a year in regular pay are excluded from sections 10 and 16 and section 18(3) from 1 May 2026 (Government Notice 7384).

PAYE and UIF on the payslip

PAYE is worked out the way SARS's tables do it: the month's pay times 12, less retirement fund contributions within the limit, taxed from the 2026/27 table, less the rebates and medical scheme fees tax credits, divided by 12 (SARS). A bonus is taxed at the extra tax it adds to the year. UIF is 1% from the employee and 1% from the employer, on pay up to R17 712 a month (SARS).
