A receipt is not a tax invoice

A receipt records that you were paid. A tax invoice is the document a VAT-registered business issues for the supply itself, with the details in section 20 of the VAT Act. If you're registered for VAT, issue the tax invoice as well: your client needs it to claim the VAT back (section 16(2)(a)). At R50 or less, paid in money, you don't have to issue a tax invoice, but you must give your client a document SARS accepts. (section 20(6))

Receipts that mark invoices paid

Invoices you download from the invoice generator are kept on this device. Choose one at the top of the receipt maker and the client, invoice number and amount still owing fill in. When your receipts cover the invoice, it is marked paid in your register. Part-payments count too: the receipt shows the balance still owing.

Receipt questions

What should a receipt include?
Your business name and contact details, a receipt number, the date, who paid, the amount, how they paid (cash, EFT or card), the payment reference, and what the payment was for or which invoice it pays.
Is a receipt the same as a tax invoice?
No. A receipt shows that you were paid; a tax invoice is the document a VAT-registered business issues for a supply, with the details section 20 of the VAT Act lists. If you're registered for VAT, your client needs the tax invoice to claim the VAT back (section 16(2)(a)).
How can I create proof of payment?
If you received the money, a receipt like this one is your client's proof that they paid you. If you made the payment, the confirmation from your bank is the usual proof of payment.
Can I write my own receipts?
Yes. A receipt is your own record that you were paid, so you can make it yourself, as long as it is true: issue one only for money you have actually received.
How do I number receipts?
Give each receipt its own number in a series, such as REC-0001, REC-0002, with your own prefix if you like. After each download, the receipt maker suggests the next number on this device.
